The Presentation Experience
“One song? What a rip!” - Unwrapping The Beautiful Experience
The 1994 TV special entitled The Beautiful Experience (TBE) is a deceptively simple work. Ostensibly a story about a lonely girl who enters an online chat and gets more than she bargained for, TBE is a dizzying synthesis of Prince’s myriad creative projects at the time. This presentation will map out the sprawling web of studio video clips (many unreleased) from several albums, live band footage, choreography, and even the Glam Slam Ulysses stage musical. Along the way, we encounter cinematic techniques such as framing devices, experimental narrative structure drawing on Lynchian dream logic and cyberpunk, and of course, Prince’s wicked sense of humor!
