Lee Christian
The International Lovers Experience
(A Gold Experience Roundtable)
Lee Christian is a frontman, musician, songwriter, producer, indie record label boss, radio presenter/producer, ex-music journalist and mentor/consultant to musicians all over the world.
He has been making music and recording bands for 30 years, touring the UK repeatedly until he had destroyed every venue he could and making records with his 2000’s rock band Smilex: winning awards and fans in: The Damned (handpicked as support), XFM, Playmusic (Best Live Band Award 2010), BBC 6music and collaborators in Skunk Anansie (Ace produced 2 albums for them) and laptop rap pioneer and lithop inventor Mc Lars and Shaodow (with whom they released a song for LoveMusicHateRacism), recently reuniting after a 10 year hiatus.
In other guises (Solo or in Boywithatoy, Chateaux69, Refuge For Homeless Prose) Lee’s released over a dozen albums, supported Roachford and Nouvelle Vague and played many festivals and venues, with worldwide airplay and coverage. His collective of Oxford’s most talented players, The Prohibition Smokers’ Club covers a lesser known Prince song in most every set (The Ride, Endorphin Machine, The Undertaker, 5 Women, Sometimes It Snows In April, PartyUp and more…). As leader of George Harrison tribute bands Piggies and The (New) Rebels he has played massive events for hardcore (and northern) Beatles fans at The Cavern, Liverpool Philharmonic, St George’s Hall (including a full sitar and tabla set) and survived!
He’s run indie record label Quickfix Recordings for 25 years releasing music by international artists, both established, such as Jennie ‘Bellestar’ Matthias (with members of the Sugar Hill band/On-U Sound crew) & Kellindo Parker (sideman to Janelle Monae & nephew of Maceo & Melvin!) and unknown/underground (discovering & helping launch the careers of many bands including Youthmovies, Foals, Desert Storm) and curating a stage at Riverside Festival which has led to it being praised in The Guardian UK newspaper and by various BBC Radio DJs.
As a producer/engineer/mixer for 30 years, he has worked in all mediums and with most genres and has an expansive credit list of indie bands including sessions for Peel faves Lapsus Linguae & Meanwhile, Back In Communist Russia… and The Rock Of Travolta’s Xfm session for Jon Kennedy. He’s also remixed the likes of MC Tunes & Shed Seven and organised gigs, events and festivals for 2 decades and even managed Adamski’s cyberbilly alter ego Sonny E for a moment.
He’s studied and worked in a ridiculous amount of areas of the industry and so now spends most of his time consulting, producing, helping other artists – especially new bands/artists.
He’s published an indie comic book (Theodicy Comics), produced and scored two short films and appeared in the documentary Anyone Can Play Guitar (with an extra feature dedicated to Smilex’s fallout with The Young Knives) as well as producing radio & internet media for decades – interviewing members of Living Colour, Foo Fighters, Brand New, Spiritualized & Daisy Chainsaw/Queen Adreena & collaborators of Sly Stone, George Clinton & Sinead O’Connor.
Lee has been a Prince fan since he was 8 and heard “Let’s Go Crazy” on the virgin play of Purple Rain on cassette in his dad’s car stereo and by the end of the guitar solo climax knew he had found his favourite dude. Prince has remained a constant inspiration to him ever since (in many ways, not least his fearlessness in many areas and disciplines). Lee recently released a collaboration with WDPDTW? and symposium regular, poet & Prince author C Liegh McInnis. His 1st academic presentation of any kind was for the #Come30 Virtual Symposium in 2024. It was c-o-o-l.
